Causes of Hair Loss

As reported in the US news on October 23, 2020, at 9:03 AM, the human being has three states or phases :

  • Resting
  • Shedding
  • growing

While most human hair remains in a growth phase, the loss of 100 strands of hair from the scalp is a normal range of hair loss in one day – when hair loss increases above this number, it is considered a hair loss problem.

According to Dr. Linda Anegawa, an internist for the Honolulu-based virtual health platform PlushCare, “when the loss of the hairs continues in a state of shedding and rest, that is called hair loss”

There are some common causes for the normal loss of approximately 100 strands per day

  • A less common cause of hair loss with many other causes is an autoimmune disease called lupus.
  • One type of hair loss because of stress is called telogen effluvium.
  • Female or male genetic hair loss pattern called androgenic alopecia
  • A disease called “Alopecia areata” causes bald patches because of the hair coming out in the form of  small clumps
  • Hair loss because of pulling hair repeatedly like a tight braid is called Traction Alopecia

According to Dr. Susan Massick, associate professor and dermatologist at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, “Hair loss due to coronavirus is likely related to telogen effluvium.” The main physical stressors associated with telogen effluvium are :

  • Weight loss
  • High fever with severe infection
  • Hospitalization with illness
  • Surgery and childbirth
  • Heavy dieting
  • Miscarriage
  • Use of different types of medications associated with hair loss called medication-Related Hair Loss, such as blood thinners or stating that lower cholesterol.

If you have recovered from COVID-19 but are still losing hair in clumps or patches, so this is the best time to see the doctor, dermatologists know the medicines best and can better treat hair loss, you can also talk to your primary health advisor, you may need a blood test to tell you about the basic cause of hair loss, make sure your doctor knows about your recovery from COVID-19, at some point hair loss may be because of iron deficiency or thyroid diseases.

According to Darius, if you have the following conditions, it is not associated with telogen effluvium

  • Scalp pain
  • Itching or burning of the scalp
